BUT - it's total lack of grooming did not match the rather proper little specimen that you photographed. No one quite caught the photogenic quality that you managed to capture. The critter is a moth caterpillar, commonly known as a pussy moth or puss caterpillar. Scientific name Megalopyge opercularis. All that hair is a form of defence, since the hairs are venomous and can cause severe reactions if they come into contact with the skin.
